  1. Minor WI: Bormann in Nuremberg

Re the firing squad thing, I guess the Allied decision-makers simply did not believe the defendants merited any form of execution that would have implied the condemned were honorable soldiers simply doing their duty.
  2. Minor WI: Bormann in Nuremberg

Bormann will be hanged. The International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg was authorized to impose death sentences by hanging (the traditional American-British method of execution), or by beheading (the historical German mode of execution) only. Convicted defendants could appeal for clemency to...
  3. Minor WI: Bormann in Nuremberg

Bormann will hang. I have no doubt about that.
  4. The Career of a Naval Officer

Well, if you want to command an American aircraft carrier, you will ordinarily have to have successfully commanded another ship first-usually a tanker or other support vessel. I believe this practice was first introduced during the later part of the Second World. It would be unusual to assign a...
  5. The Career of a Naval Officer

Yup. A successful tour of duty as a wartime squadron CO (burnished by that MOH) would likely be followed in OTL by a stateside assignment selling war bonds, at least a brief period as an instructor and then tried out as an XO of a CAG. Assuming success at that, promotion to commander is...
  6. WI:Hirohito refuses to renounce his divinity?

I am inclined to opine otherwise. The American hangman assigned to work in Japan, First Lieutenant Charles Rexroad, was quite competent (unlike the bungling John C. Woods of Nuremberg infamy). Rexroad had trained to act as a hangman while serving in San Quentin as a guard before the war, then...
  7. Fate of Edward VIII if Wallis Simpson never existed

Doesn't work like that. Her father was heir presumptive to Edward. When he dies, his children are next in line. Didn't have sons, so the oldest daughter becomes heir presumptive. Before any surviving brother gets the nod, all of the Duke of York's issue needs to die first.
  8. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

Unlikely. OTL, he categorically refused to evacuate the Philippines by submarine. MacArthur would probably try to escape from Corregidor in a rowboat before voluntarily setting foot in a British submarine.
  9. Research on Allied/Soviet Liaison Efforts in WW2

There was co-operation between NKVD and the SOE. I believe there was an SOE mission in Moscow at one point. OSS-NKVD co--operation was vetoed by J. Edgar Hoover who thought the idea supremely stupid ( rightly so, in my opinion). There were no Allied liaison officers stationed or embedded with...
  10. WI: Grant Says Fuck It, Makes His Entire Cabinet Loyal Generals

Sherman was only acting secretary of war for 29 days in 1869, serving as a placeholder until Grant nominated a full time replacement. Sherman was not interested in being Secretary of War on a permanent basis as this would have required him to resign his commission as a general.
  11. Why Did the Japanese Military Think Pearl Harbor Was a Good Idea?

Yes, in 1938 while he was Commander Aircraft Battle Force. If my Swiss cheese memory has not betrayed me, I think he participated in an earlier similar exercise (1932?) while commanding USS Lexington. I am not certain of his precise role in the earlier fleet problem, however.
  12. A plausible non-Reagan actor, filmmaker, singer, or entertainer as USA president?

His thankfully brief career in porn might have been a campaign issue. I doubt Stallone ever really seriously considered a career in politics.
  13. AHC: No WWII Veterans as POTUS

He was popular with the voters in Missouri, certainly, but not neccesarily with his fellow senators or the national press. At least, that is my impression. Your mileage may vary.
  14. AHC: No WWII Veterans as POTUS

Secretary of the Air Force (the first one, I think), and a not terribly highly regarded Senator.
  15. AHC: No WWII Veterans as POTUS

Jimmy Carter is a war veteran. He qualified for the Victory Medal since he was in service prior to December 31, 1946-and his service career started on the day he entered the United States Naval Academy in 1943. He was, not of course, a combat veteran.
  16. WI the Cherry Blossoms fall on Bataan in the Spring of 1942?

I think the word WILL leak out, most likely through interception and decryption of Japanese communications. It would be very hard if not outright impossible for them to repeatedly deploy bioweapons without some hint of it showing up on the comm nets. Practically inevitable, one would think.
  17. WI: Successful Soviet invasion of Britain

    John Jervis *likes* this post.
  18. What happens to the Graf Zepplin?

If a US Navy vessel takes her down, yeah, guaranteed Navy Cross for the skipper. If naval aviation is involved, the pilots will get a couple as well. Not too sure about the RN. I'm under the impression the British didn't hand out prestigious combats decorations quite as freely to senior...
  19. WI: Soviet Union tries to re-capture Alaska during the Cold War?

Small point of accuracy. Last American ground forces left Siberia in 1920. The US Navy operated a small radio station in the Soviet Far East until 1922. While some fighting between the Soviets and the Americans in Siberia did occur, it was pretty small-scale and sporadic in nature. Owing to the...
  20. WI: Soviet Union tries to re-capture Alaska during the Cold War?

The US responds violently. With everything in the arsenal. EVERYTHING. The war will go nuclear. Teh end.
