It's Wednesday, May 19, 2004, and the Giants are taking on the Chicago Cubs in the second game of a three-game series at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Kirk Rueter will pitch for the Giants, while Carlos Zambrano gets the ball for the Cubs. Bonds is in left field and will bat seventh, as his replacement Jeffrey Hammonds did in real life. The Cubs won the actual game 4-3 in ten innings.

Let's examine Bonds' at-bats first:

In the second, he popped up to the Cubs' Mark Grudzielanek at second.

In the third with one out and the Cubs leading 6-0, J.T. Snow walked. Marquis Grissom lined a single to right that put two men on, and third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo's bouncer to his counterpart Aramis Ramirez moved the runners up to second and third respectively. Shortstop Pedro Feliz was next, and his base hit to left scored Snow to put the Giants on the board. That brought up catcher A.J. Pierzynski, who smacked Zambrano's 0-1 fastball into the left field bleachers for a three-run homer, his twelfth of the year. All of a sudden, the Cubs' lead was down to two runs at 6-4.

Bonds walked to keep the inning alive, but right fielder Michael Tucker grounded to Ramirez at third to retire the side. At the end of two and a half, it was Chicago 6, San Francisco 4.

In the sixth, Bonds took a called third strike.

In the seventh, Grissom led off with a single to left center. Alfonzo beat out a bouncer to short for an infield single to put two men on, but Zambrano regrouped, retiring Feliz on a popup to Derrek Lee at first, Pierzynski on a fly to right, and Bonds on a popup to short.

In the ninth, Alfonzo drew a leadoff walk against Cubs closer Kyle Farnsworth. Feliz singled to center to put two men on, but Pierzynski's popup was caught by the Cubs' Mark Grudzielanek at second for out number one. Bonds lined a single to right to load the bases, but Farnsworth struck out Tucker swinging for out number two, then did the same to pinch hitter Jeffrey Hammonds (batting for reliever Dustin Hermanson) to end the game with the bases loaded. Final score: Cubs 11, Giants 5.

Now let's look at the rest of the game action:

The Cubs jumped on Giants starter Kirk Rueter for two runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, Grudzielanek lined a base hit to center. Left fielder Moises Alou flew to Bonds along the left field line for out number two, but third baseman Aramis Ramirez smacked Rueter's 1-1 slider over the center field wall for a two-run homer to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead. It was Ramirez's thirty-seventh home run of the year.

The Cubs added four more runs in the second. Catcher Michael Barrett led off with a bloop single to left center. Center fielder Corey Patterson was hit in the knee by a pitch to put two men on, and shortstop Ramon Martinez walked to load the bases. Zambrano's fly to left center was caught by Grissom for out number one, but second baseman Jose Macias lined a single to left center that scored Barrett and Patterson and extended the Chicago lead to 4-0.

Martinez moved to third on the hit and came home when Grudzielanek's fly to center pushed Grissom back to the wall before he could make the catch. Alou was next, and he lined a double off the wall in left to score Macias and make it 6-0 Cubs after two,

After giving up four runs in the top of the third. The North Siders added a run in the bottom of the inning against new Giants pitcher Brad Hennessey. With one out, Barrett singled to left center and scored on Patterson's double over Grissom's head in center to score Barrett and give the Cubs a 7-4 lead. Patterson quickly stole third, but he was stranded there when Martinez struck out swinging and Zambrano grounded to first to end the inning.

The Cubs added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Macias led off with a single to right, but was forced by Grudzielanek, who was in turn forced by Alou. Ramirez's base hit to center put runners at the corners, and Lee walked to load the bases. Hennessey proceeded to walk Barrett on a 3-2 pitch to force in Alou and Patterson on a 3-2 pitch to force in Ramirez, and just like that it was 9-4 Chicago. Martinez stroked a single to left that brought Lee home to make it 10-4. but Bonds' throw to the plate was in time to nail the incoming Barrett and end the inning.

The Giants scored their final run in the top of the fifth when Grissom led off by hitting Zambrano's 2-1 hanging curveball into the basket in left field for his twenty-third home run of the year. Halfway through, the Cubs led 10-5,

The home squad closed out the scoring in the bottom of the fifth. Zambrano led off with a lined single to right, but was forced by Macias, who was in turn forced by Grudzielanek, Alou walked to put two men on, and Ramirez followed with a base hit to left that cashed in Grudzielanek with the Cubs' eleventh run.

I'm going to put a bookmark in the 2004 season for the moment to look at something I noticed while perusing Retrosheet.

There were quite a few games early in his career where Bonds entered as a defensive replacement in the eighth on ninth inning, too late to make a plate appearance. There was also an instance or two where he was an announced pinch hitter, only for the other manager to make a pitching change which caused Bonds to be removed in favor of another hitter before he could come to the plate. I've decided to include these games, since Bonds never had a chance to hit a home run in them. (There are also games in which Bonds only drew a walk, which means that he never had an official at-bat. These are not included.)

We'll begin with Barry's Giants career for once. The first of these games took place on June 25, 2000, when the Giants took on the Houston Astros at what was then Enron Field in the third and final game of a three-game series. Bonds played the bottom of the ninth inning in the Giants 4-2 win, spending that half inning as a defensive replacement in left field. In the upcoming sim, he'll start in left field and bat third, replacing Felipe Crespo. Russ Ortiz will pitch for the Giants, while Chris Holt gets the ball for the Astros, As we begin, Bonds is batting ,306 (147-480) with forty-nine home runs and 106 runs batted in. The Giants won the actual game, 4-2.

The Giants jumped on top with two runs in the first. With two out, Bonds and second baseman Jeff Kent drew back-to-back walks. Right fielder Ellis Burks followed with a triple into the right field corner to bring home both runners and give the Giants an early 2-0 lead. J,T, Snow followed with a high fly ball to deep right center, but Astros center fielder Juilo Lugo made the catch at the wall to retire the side.

The visitors added a run in the top of the second. Shortstop Rich Aurilia led off with a single to left. Catcher Bobby Estalella walked to put two men on, but Ortiz hit a comebacker to Holt, who threw to second baseman Bill Spiers for the force on Estalella, Spiers then threw to Jeff Bagwell at first to complete the 1-4-3 double play. Center fielder Marvin Benard was next, and he lined a base hit up the middle to score Aurilia and make it 3-0 Giants.

The Giants' bats kept rolling with three more runs in the top of the third. Bonds flew to Lugo in right center for the first out, but Kent walked on four pitches. Burks' base hit to left center moved Kent to third, but he was erased when Snow bounced into a force play. Kent scored on the out, and the Giants led 4-0, Aurilia's single to right put runners at the corners, and Estalella brought both Snow and Aurilia home when his bloop fell in shallow left center for a double. After two and a half, it was Giants 6, Astros 0,

The Giants scored three more times in the top of the fourth. With one out, Mueller hit a sinking line drive to center. Lugo tried for a diving catch, but the ball bounced off of his glove. Mueller hustled into second, and Lugo was charged with a two-base error. Bonds walked to put two men on, and Kent smacked a 2-1 curveball from Astros reliever Mike Maddux over the wall in right for a three-run homer to extend the Frisco lead to 9-0. It was Kent's thirty-fourth home run of the year.

Bonds made the final out in the top of the sixth, as he grounded to Bagwell at first.

The rout continued in the top of the seventh, as the Boys from the Bay scored twice. Kent led off with a grounder to second that was muffed by Bogar, allowing Kent to reach. Burks walked to put two men on, and Snow lined a double off the wall in center to bring both Kent and Burks home and give the Giants an 11-0 lead.

The Astros finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh, as left fielder Daryle Ward hit Ortiz's 1-1 slider down the right field line and over the wall for his twenty-first home run of the year. The Stros still trailed 11-1 after seven.

The visitors got that run back in the top of the eighth. Benard led off with a fly ball to right that was dropped by Berkman; Benard ended up at second, and Berkman was charged with a two-base error, the Astros' second such error of the game. Mueller's bouncer to second moved Benard to third, and Bonds walked to put runners at the corners. Kent bounced into a force play, which eliminated Bonds but allowed Benard to score the Giants' twelfth run.

The Giants had one last big inning in the top of the ninth. With one out, Aurilia singled to left. Doug Mirabelli (batting for Estalella) walked to put two men on, and Armando Rios (batting for Ortiz) did the same to load the bases. Benard made it three consecutive walks, and Aurilia was awarded home plate to make it 13-1.

Mueller lined a base hit to right, which brought home Mirabelli and Rios with Frisco runs number fourteen and fifteen respectively. Benard moved to third on the hit, and Bonds' bouncer to third brought him home to make it 16-1 while Mueller moved to second. Bill was stranded when Kent also grounded to third to retire the side. The Astros' pitching staff finished with a total of ten walks for the game.

The Astros closed out the scoring in the bottom of the ninth, when Ward whacked reliever Felix Rodriguez's 1-2 fastball over the right field wall for his second home run of the game and twenty-second of the year. Final score: Giants 16, Astros 2.

Final totals: Giants 16-10-0. Astros 2-6-3.

Pitchers' records remain the same.

HR- SF: Kent (34)
HOU: Ward 2 (22)

DS- Nen (40)

LHR- HOU: Bagwell (46)

Kent was named Player of the Game. He hit a three-run homer in the fourth, drove in a total of four runs, and scored four times. Honorable mention goes to Ortiz, who pitched eight innings, holding the Astros to one run on four hits while walking two and striking out eight. He threw 109 pitches.

Bonds was hitless in three official at-bats with three walks, two runs scored, and an RBI. He's currently batting .304 (147-483) with forty-nine home runs and 107 runs batted in.

He's walked 120 times, which leads the National League by six over the Pirates' Brian Giles and is good for third in the majors, three behind the Blue Jays' Carlos Delgado for second.

He's scored 131 runs, which is third in the National League, seven behind the Rockies' Todd Helton for second. Bagwell leads with 151; he scored a run in the actual game but lost it in the sim.

His on-base percentage is .441. which is good for second in the National League, twenty-two points behind Helton.

His slugging percentage is .683, which is good for second in the National League, fifteen points behind Helton.

His OPS is 1.124, which is second in the National League, thirty-eight points behind Helton.

In the fourth with the Giants leading 3-1, Bonds led off with a double to right. He moved to third on second baseman Ramon Martinez's fly to the Cardinals' Eric Davis in right for out number one and held there on third baseman Bill Mueller's slow roller to first. A wild pitch from Hentgen brought him home, and the Boys from the Bay led 4-1 after two and a half.

In the fifth with two out, Murray walked. Snow was next, and he hammered Hentgen's 0-1 curveball over the left center field wall for a two-run homer to establish our final score: Giants 6, Cardinals 1. It was Snow's twentieth home run of the year, and it traveled an estimated 405 feet. Left center field is 372 feet from home plate at Busch Stadium.
