So I was playing the old game Diablo 2 a few days ago, and remembered that the Necromancer class is only playable, because according to the lore of that class, Necromancers either help the forces of Good or the forces of Evil depending on which side is losing to keep up a perceived balance of Good and Evil in the world, and while the game is taking place the forces of Hell are taking the upper hand. Presumably after the storyline of the game ended, they again started aiding Hell.
So is it possible that an extremist group with a similar ideology comes to be in our world, maybe if a Duotheist version of Gnosticism survives after Antiquity, that is neither Zoroastrianism, nor Manichaeism?
For example during WW2, they would have helped the Allies, once they got to know about the Nazi extermination camps. During the Cold War they would have helped the West until the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, after which they would have switched sides to the Soviet Union. In our present-day they would be helping ISIS and North Korea.
