AHC: Caribbean War

With any POD after the end of the Cuban Missile Crisis, have Cuba get involved in a conflict with any sovereign nation in the Caribbean that last at least six months. Bonus points if the US or any other major power does not intervene.

After the Cuban Missile Crisis- after Oct 1962? So, I guess that we just miss the opportunity to use Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina evading his OTL assassination (in May 1961) as the POD. Still, I'd say that the Dominican Republic seems to be by far the best choice as an adversary. Perhaps if Cuba decides to intervene when the Dominican Republic's first freely elected president, Juan Bosch, gets overthrown on September 25, 1963 in a military coup? The embarrassment of Trujillo's brutal dictatorship (with the CIA having supported his assassination) was still relatively recent, and the USA probably wouldn't have been willing to resort to direct military intervention at this stage (as they later did in OTL's Operation Power Pack, after the Dominican Civil War). And they'd have the support of the Dominican Republic's legitimate Government- effectively, free passage to deploy their military (peacekeeping) forces on the island, instead of having to fight their way through...

Pretty difficult for the Cubans to deploy much of anything

Pretty difficult for the Cubans to deploy much of anything outside of Cuba in the early 1960s, much less sustain whatever they can get somewhere.

The Cuban Navy in this era makes the Dominican Navy look like the Grand Fleet...

Same for airpower (or lack thereof)

There's also the minor problem for the Cubans that trying to get anything anywhere in the Greater Antilles basically requires them to steam past Key West and/or Guantanamo Bay, and comes pretty close to Roosevelt Roads.

They might be able to invade the Caymans...;)

Best,
